Cosmetic Treatment for Varicose & Spider Veins in Los Angeles

Visible leg veins can affect confidence and comfort, even when they are not medically dangerous. At the Vein & Wound Center of LA, we offer cosmetic vein treatments designed to safely and effectively reduce or eliminate unwanted varicose and spider veins.

These treatments are minimally invasive, performed in-office, and require little to no downtime. While results are not immediate, most patients enjoy a noticeable improvement after several sessions.

How Cosmetic Vein Treatment Works

Because no two patients’ legs are the same, we often use a combination of techniques to achieve the best cosmetic results:

  • Microsclerotherapy – Fine injections of a special medication (sclerosant) into small spider and reticular veins, causing them to collapse and fade over time.
  • Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy – For slightly larger feeder veins that contribute to visible surface veins.
  • Microphlebectomy – Tiny, micro-incisions allow removal of larger surface varicose veins for smoother skin.
  • Adjunctive vein procedures – In some cases, treating underlying venous insufficiency may be needed before cosmetic treatments for optimal and lasting results.

What to Expect During Treatment

  • In-office procedure: Treatments are performed in a comfortable outpatient setting.
  • Little to no downtime: Patients usually return to work or daily activities the same day.
  • Compression stockings: Often worn afterward to improve results and reduce minor swelling or bruising.
  • Temporary side effects: Bruising, redness, itching, or mild discomfort at injection sites is normal and fades over days to weeks.
  • Skin discoloration: Some patients develop brown discoloration (hemosiderin staining) where treated veins once were. This happens when small amounts of iron from the blood are deposited under the skin. While it is not dangerous, it may take several months to fade, and in rare cases, may persist long-term.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Cosmetic sclerotherapy is rarely “one and done.” Most patients require:

  • Several treatment sessions on the same areas to achieve full clearance of spider or reticular veins.
  • Intervals of 4–6 weeks between sessions, allowing the treated veins time to fade before re-treating.
  • Ongoing maintenance treatments in the future, since new veins can develop over time.

Microphlebectomy, when needed, typically requires only one session per vein cluster, though sclerotherapy may be added afterward for fine-tuning.

When Will I See Results?

  • Spider veins typically begin to fade within 3–6 weeks, though improvement continues for several months.
  • Larger varicose veins may take 2–3 months or longer to fully resolve after treatment.
  • Areas of brown staining (hemosiderin deposition) may last longer and gradually fade, but improvement is expected over time.
  • Final results often require multiple visits and are best evaluated at your follow-up consultation.
